For Nursing Assistants

Who should attend

If you answered yes to any of the following questions, then you should plan to attend the Leadership Conference for Nursing Assistants.

• Do you want to be more effective in your regional, state and national organization for nursing assistants?
• Do you want to initiate a professional organization for nursing assistants in your area?
• Do you serve on a safety or care planning committee?
• Do you mentor new nursing assistants?
• Are you called upon to use your skills in organizing, decision making and problems solving when performing daily tasks of care?
• Do you know what you have already accomplished in your career as a nursing assistant?

We need you or representatives from your group to consider attending this conference - especially if you are just now trying to develop a NA group. The conference is about some of the new skills that you will need in the work setting and when working with your group. In this memo, I want to share some important information about the Leadership Conference and some of the things we are doing to help you get there.

Nursing assistants provide leadership in many ways when they work with the new nursing assistant, serve on a safety or care planning committee, or work with peers in regional, state and national organizations. Nursing assistants also use skills of organizing, decision making and problems solving when performing daily tasks of care.

This new emphasis on the leadership roles of nursing assistants is definitely emerging as an important issue to consider in the work setting and also for career advancement and peer support. Now there is a conference especially designed to address these and other issues of leadership for, by and with nursing assistants.

You can gain practical leadership skills, and connect with others who share similar roles at this very special conference. The National Leadership Conference for Nursing Assistants will provide 15 hours of specialized training for nursing assistants in topic areas such as:

• New roles and new skills for nursing assistants in the changing health care system - career development pathways
• How to create your own network of support, recognition, education and advocacy in the facility and in the community.
• Using decision making skills when providing care
• Coaching, prompting and shaping - skills for working with a new nursing assistant

• How to convene and organize a new group or evaluate an existing group
• Finding and working with sponsors and funding sources on the local level
• How to build membership
• How to conduct a group meeting
• How to be effective as a group member
• Finding and working with mentors

The Leadership Conference for Nursing Assistants (LCNA) is being conducted as a special cooperative project between the NCCNHR, the Career Nurse Assistants' Programs, Inc., the National Network of Career Nurse Assistants' Programs, and the National Twenty Year Club for Nursing Assistants. The issues addressed in these workshops were identified by nursing assistants nationwide through focus groups, questionnaires and other forms of feedback.

Schedule

The following schedule is for the nursing assistants who will be attending the National Leadership Conference for Nursing Assistants. Other workshops also will be conducted and may be of interest to nursing assistants. A brochure about the entire program will be provided on request. The Leadership Conference for Nursing Assistants includes the following sessions:

Saturday, November 7, 1998 - Leadership sessions

12:00 noon - 5:00 PM, and 7:00 - 9:00 PM

Sunday, November 8, 1998 Leadership sessions

8:00 AM - 12:00 noon, and 12:00 - 5:00 PM

Monday, November 9, 1998 The Fifth Annual National Forum on Nursing
4:00 - 5:30 PM Assistants

National Most Service Years Award for Nursing Assistants

Tuesday, November 10, 1998 Reports, resolutions and recommendations due for the general meeting

Wednesday, November 11, 1998 General Meeting with NCCNHR and Coalition members

Saturday through Wednesday Other workshops, sessions of interest to nursing assistants and social events

Travel, hotel and registration costs do not need to be barriers to attending. Here are some methods you might use to cover these costs:

• Your facility may want to send you as a representative of the safety or care planing committee.
• Your organization or facility may conduct a fund raising event to cover these costs.
• Local vendors who provide services to your facility may want to fund your trip.
• The United Way may be able to advise you about local grants that can be used for training purposes.
• The District Nurses Association or Directors of Nursing group may want to sponsor you to this conference.
• Some scholarships are available to eligible nursing assistants who also agree to use the principals of this conference in their own facility or organization.
