The 26th Annual National Nursing Assistants Week

The Great American Caregiver

June 12-19, 2003

Retaining good workers is critical to good care. When you recognize your nursing assistants during National Nursing Assistants Week, you join together with thousands of others across the country to validate and promote visibility to this important health care worker the NA who provides as much as 90% of the direct care in long term care.  The 26th Annual National Nursing Assistants Week is June 12-19, 2003, and the focus on the Great American Caregiver continues throughout the year.  The 26th Annual Nursing Assistants Convention is June 26-27 in Akron, Ohio.

The GAC Program focuses on the nursing assistant as an individual who brings strengths, humor, compassion, dedication, warmth and other qualities that add a human element to the tasks of caring in long term care.  We hope you will use some of the ideas and projects and momentum of Nursing Assistants Week to continue this focus.

Here are a few ideas for 2003

o          Ask you Mayor to proclaim the week.

o          Ask your local newspaper to write a story about your NA who has the most service years.

o          Plan a Service Award Program.

o          Convene a meeting for your 20 Year Club members, review their Task List and plan projects for these important workers.

o          Become a member of a professional organization for NAs.

o          Construct a bulletin board display of your Great American Caregivers.

o          Do an Inservice on Great American Caregiver and submit to Essay Contests.

o          Host a workshop for NAs in your area.

o          Invite your local congressman or mayor to discuss NA related issues with a group of NAs

o          Work with the residents council to develop a project between families and NAs.

o          Schedule time for NAs to take inservices and find resources on the internet.

o          Visit the NNCNA Web site which is < www.cna-network.org >

o          Join the Trainers, NAs or Male NAs Listserv or message board send email to [email protected] for info

o          Send photos of your NA Week events for posting on the NNCNA Web site
