Being a member of a professional organization is an important part of your career growth. The National Network of Career Nursing Assistants is a non-profit, tax exempt, professional organization promoting recognition, education, research, networking and peer support development for nurse assistants in nursing homes, home care, adult day care, assisted living and other long term care settings.

Members include nursing assistants and nursing assistant related groups, organizations, educators, supervisors, researchers, publishers and those who support and endorse the work of the Career Nursing Assistant in long term care. (go to response form).

Special membership is available for nursing assistants who have 20 or more years of service and an annual award is presented to the nursing assistants who has the most years of service nationwide.(go to Twenty Year Club)

• OUR MISSION STATEMENT FOR THE NATIONAL NETWORK OF CAREER NURSING ASSISTANTS(top)

We believe that residents in nursing homes and other long-term care settings deserve courteous and appropriate care, and a quality of life within the health care system.

We further believe that the nursing assistants who provide 90% of this direct-care deserve realistic assignments, appropriate training and supervision, adequate compensation, benefits and career advancement opportunities, recognition of effort, and a work environment that provides the support and supplies needed in order to perform tasks of care.

Our aim is to create a National Voice by, for and with nursing assistants and other direct care givers through programs of career development, recognition, education, research, networking and coalition building, peer support and advocacy for all nursing assistants in nursing homes, home care, and other long term care settings.

Best known as the founder and sponsor of the annual nationwide observance of Nurse Assistants' Week (since 1985) and Career Nurse Assistants' Day (since 1977), the NNCNA also provides:

Dear friends,
Thank you for being a part of the growing movement for positive change in long term care practices. Largely due to efforts of people like you, the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants is recognized across the country as an organization that fosters skill development, career growth, chapter development, and recognition by, for, and with the nursing assistants in nursing homes and other long term care settings.

Again, this past year we were able to work with thousands of nursing assistants to provide a well-deserved recognition through the 15th annual observance of "National Nursing Assistants' Week" and 23rd annual "Career Nursing Assistants' Day." Many Mayors and Governors proclaim the Week each year, and the Governors of both Texas and South Carolina also proclaimed 1999 as the Year of the Long Term Care Worker in their states.

The Second National Leadership Conference for Nursing Assistants and the Sixth Annual National Forum on Nursing Assistants were held in Washington, DC, in November 1999, and provided additional opportunities for nursing assistants to come together in a common purpose. Margaret Peek CNA, Fifth Avenue Health Care, Rome GA received the National Most Service Years Award for 55 years of service, and Carter Catlett Williams LSW, Rochester NY received the Honorary Twenty Year Club Award for 1999.

Nursing assistants also addressed their concerns relating to care on the national level through presentations to HCFA, the Special Senate Committee on Aging, National Area Agencies on Aging, AARP, and others. Our thanks to the National Citizens Coalition for Nursing Home Reform who allow us to conduct these programs at their Annual Meeting each year.

The Millennium Gathering of Nursing Assistants conducted on January 8, 2000 brought nursing assistants together in their own facilities, in peer groups and community organizations, and on the Internet. Our goal is to start the new Millennium with a spirit of good will and anticipation of the good we can accomplish when we work together.

January 8 provided an important kick-off for a project that will continue throughout the year. Additional information can be found on this site (go to Leadership) and also is included in the 2000 Public Relations Kit and other official materials (go to response form).

We hope you will continue to work with this program throughout the year. Our good wishes for a New Millennium of growth and good will.
