In most cases the experience has to be in recent past, but you can contact the NATP in Illinois and ask them.
However, much has changed since then and you may want to take the course again. It should not cost you anything to do this and there should be one close by.
Suggesting that you contact the NATP and also go to a local nursing home and talk with the inservice person about the location of classes and testing in your area.

: Hi, I am thinking of going back to my old profession "Nursing Assistant". I went through a three month training course for the government in 1973. (Long time ago, I know.) I worked for a VA hospital for 5 years, then quit. Then, in 1980 (approx) I got a job in a nursing home and was allowed to work because of the "Grandfather Clause". As I recall, they would not honor my government training. My question is, do I have to take a cna training course again to become a cna or can I just take the test? Also, does anyone know the lifting requirements of a cna? It has been a long time since I've had to do that kind of work and I am not quite as strong as I once was. Thanks in advance for any information! P.S. I live in Illinois.
