The shortage is bad all over the country. People are getting burnt out, go to other nursing homes hoping for better wages or getting out of nursing completly. This has been going on aroudn here for years now. The problem is that administration is not changing their attitude towards their direct care staff. Profits come first, we are expendable so they think. Profits are their priorities over patients'care. If anything goes wrong, the CNA is the 1st one to get blamed and to go out the door as they see it fit.
I would be careful about working on my own time. Actualy you should quit it completly, it is a liability matter. Let's say that you get hurt or a patient gets hurt? What do you think will happen? They have a good chance of fighting workman's comp and you have more chances at being sued. They will not back you up. Pleease reconsider it.
I am no longer in nursing homes, but I am trying to develop a plan so I can approach the local DONs or administrators and talk to them about making changes.
