I am the Inservice Director at a 160 bed nursing home in Central New York. Our basic calendar is that we cover one mandatory inservice per month, the first 6 months of the year - for example, January is for "restorative nursing", February is for "infection control", March is for Aging/Needs of the Elderly", etc... I put the inservice on 4 days each month - usually at 2:30 pm, 3:15 pm, and 10:30 pm. The staff get paid for attending. I usually have the inservice videotaped, so that the off hour shifts can see the inservice, without me coming in at all hours. The last 6 months of the year, the whole monthly inservice schedule starts over in July (Restorative Nsg, Infection Control, Aging...), where I replay the video. I also make the videos available from 5pm -7am in my training room, where they can sign in and watch the video when they are working. This is especially helpful for our per-diem staff that usually aren't working when the live inservices are presented. I personally dislike inservices, and I try to make mine interesting by doing games, or some other interactive inservice, like I did a walk through display where the staff had to fill out a worksheet. The display was left up 24 hours a day, for 8 days in a row, and then again in a few weeks to catch the crowd that worked the other weekend. I feel it is my responsibilty to help the staff to meet their inservice requirements on their schedule, not neccesarily on mine. I am new at this ( been in this job for 6 months).
