The requirements to retrain and/or retest are based upon the expiration date of your certificate, the inservice hours completed, and hours that you worked during the 2-year cycle. You mentioned that you were certified in 1998, but it wasn't clear when you expired. If California told you to retrain, it sounds as if your certificate has been expired for more than 2-years, in such case you would need to apply directly to an approved training program and submit fingerprints as part of the application process, unless you were previously cleared by the department. Some facilities in California have their own training program and are in great need of staff, so you may want to begin there. Also, community colleges and ROPs offer training.
