• IMPERATIVES FOR
ACTION, THE "NA TO DO" LIST 2000
The Imperatives are the "to do" list developed by nursing
assistants of the National Leadership Council of the NNCNA. This list
states what we believe is possible and some ways we will do this. They
provide direction for our joint efforts. The Imperatives were created
through the seven National Forums (1994-2000), focus groups, questionnaires
and e-mail with nursing assistants nationwide.
The Imperatives for Action 2001
1. To Create a National Voice for Career Nursing Assistants
Action
-
Foster NA participation on planning committees for local, state
and national policy groups; Inservice meetings; workshops; and conferences.

Develop guidelines and dialogues for nursing assistant responder
panels.
-
Create Position Statements about specified issues relating to
nursing assistants.
-
Involve additional chapters and groups in planning for the National
Forum and other national projects.

Expand the Nursing Assistant as Authors Program.
-
Develop a comprehensive plan for contributing to journals and
other publications
-
Publish or disseminate the findings of the Position Statement
Project by Nursing Assistants.
2. To promote Career development with ethical foundations for nursing
assistants
Action

Develop a "National Code of Ethics for Nursing Assistants"

Create Standards of Practice for the nursing assistant in performance
of daily tasks of care.

Seek avenues to redefine the role, responsibilities, training
needs and unique position of the nursing assistant in the health
care system

Provide Leadership Training and promote Chapter development on
local, state and national levels

Provide guidelines for a Nursing Assistants Speakers Bureau.
3. To expand the network of connections between nursing assistants and
others in a variety of settings
Action
-
Facilitate networking and cooperative projects among nursing assistants
related groups, organization researchers and publishers.

Develop dialogues, collaborative projects and liaison between
the Network and other related organizations.

Disseminate information to help nursing assistants use NA related
Internet connections more effectively.

Establish a Nursing Assistant Internet Committee.
-
Increase visibility of the National Network of Career Nursing
Assistants with other professional organizations.
4. To foster peer group development
Action
-
Promote peer support and group development for nursing assistants
on facility, local, state and national levels.

Develop a on-going program of mentoring for nursing assistant
leaders and Chapters.

Maintain regular contact with chapters and the Nursing Assistant
Leadership Council.

Seek funding for Task Force and Chapter Development.
5. To develop resources for the advancement of nursing assistants
Action

Foster development of a clearinghouse for nursing assistant related
resources.

Seek funding to develop and implement pilot projects that can
be replicated in other parts of the country.
