INTROCUCTION
Career Nurse Assistants' Programs, Inc. is a non-profit,

education, research, advocacy and peer support development
for nursing assistants in nursing homes and other long term
care settings. (EIN # 34-1782518). The membership of CNAP

HOW IT BEGAN
The title" Career Nursing Assistant" was coined
by nursing assistants sitting around a meeting table in Youngstown
Ohio in 1977. Sonya Thomas, a NA said, "This is not just
a job to me, this is my career." Others agreed and this
became the name of the planning group and also the title for
the Celebration of NA Experience in Akron, Ohio in 1977. This
terminology is now in common usage to identify the experienced
nursing assistant, and today's nursing assistant is proud
to be designated as a Career Nursing Assistant,
NATIONAL NURSING ASSISTANTS' WEEK,
CAREER NURSING ASSISTANTS' DAY,
The annual observance of Career Nursing Assistants' Day and
Nursing Assistants' Week that began in Ohio in 1977 as the
Ten Year Club, expanded nationwide by request in 1985. Since
that time, this popular nursing assistant recognition program
has grown to include thousands of facilities and organizations
joining together each year to recognize and honor nursing
assistants in long-term care services. Each year, members
of the CNAP and NNCNA meet in groups and by phone, email and
mail to develop plans for the annual theme, slogan and special
projects that you have come to know as National Nursing Assistants
Week.
