I don't know what state you live in, but in Indiana you have to take the class, finish your clinicals, and then you can work uncertifided and with out being on the registry for 90 days, but in those 90 days you have three chances to take the state test so that you become certifide and are put on the registry. If you don't pass the test in those 90 days then you have to retake the class. So, at least in Indiana you have to be certifide, which automatically puts you on the registry, to be employed as a nursing assitant in a long term care facility. However there are other kinds of postions such as being a resident care assitant in a assited living community that doesn't always requirer certification/registration. Also, many hospitals have their own form of certification that is only good for that one hospital, but allows you to do the same things and more as a CNA.
