A recently available resource that you will find of enormous interest is the mammoth report from the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) to the Congress on nursing home staffing. "Appropriateness of Minimum Nurse Staffing in Nursing Homes--Report to Congress." It is a report commissioned by Congress in 1990 but delivered only now. You will find of particular interest for your research Chapter 5 of the report which is devoted to what CNAs had to say about nursing home staffing: its impact on absenteeism, workload, relationships with licensed nursing staff, and positive/negative aspects of being a CNA. The report is over 500 pages long, so if you go to print it, check your paper supply first--or just select the pages you want. Chapter 5 is 32 pages long. For loads of government reports on the nursing home industry, (and many other topics you may wish to research) go to a site called "reportindex." Finally, if you are interested in becoming an administrator (or executive director as some are called), you may find my new book from the University of Wisconsin Press of great help. It is devoted to the nursing home quality standards, Medicare, Medicare+Choice, Medicaid, managed care, advance directives, resource listings and so on. Go to:
