A recent nationwide industry survey says that CNAs are paid between $6.75 and $8.50 an hour on average. Of course, this varies greatly dependent on rural vs. urban locations, the type and size of the facility and the financial situation of the facilities. A new way of paying for care in medicare skilled nursing facilities is being implemented and has thrown many facilities into financial chaos; even bankruptcy. It is called the prospective payment system or PPS. Industry insiders joke that PPS stands for "Please Pay Something! Unfortunately, it is no joke and it is making quality of care a very uncertain prospect. National statistics indicate annual turnover rates among CNAs over 80 percent, even higher in some areas. Total CNA staffing hours per resident per day crept up from 2.0 hours to 2.1 hours from 1992 to 1998, on average (HCFA, January, 2000). Being bilingual is a great asset. CNAs that speak Spanish, Hmong, or Chinese are in demand, depending on the area of the country you live in. Helpful hint: research facilities you consider working for by talking to as many employees that work there as possible. : Can anyone tell me what a CNA is paid? How is the job turnover rate? Are more than one language spoken in this field as a rule?
