Debbie,
I would figure out where everyone is at as far as
percent of time out. Is there a policy in place that dictates a certain percentage of time staff are allowed to be out sick? If not, ok. If so,
better. Set a limit to 5% a year. This is quite
reasonable and better than most places. Many facilities go by quarters.
Anyway, gather where everyone is at and have private meetings with each staff. This is time consuming, but at least they will know where they
are at. Lay it out: If they are out so many more days..such and such action can, could happen.
And follow up with this. Don't say things you can't deliver. Be firm yet compassionate, if you can. Although people get sick, they don't THAT sick THAT often and in this type of work, people need to have a work ethic that speaks quality.
Good luck.
This is happening everywhere. I think DON are afraid of disciplinary action because of the CNA
shortage; this is unfair to those who do show up
and work, who are committed and career oriented.
Patti
